What is Mulled Wine?

Mulled wine is a winter tradition here at the Blue Goose and we are sure our guests will quickly adopt this delightful winter cocktail. It's perfect for all your holiday gatherings, dinner parties, or even those lazy cold Saturdays at the house. 

Mulled wine originated in the 2nd century, It was created by the Romans who would heat wine to defend their bodies against the winter. As the Romans conquered much of Europe throughout the next century, their love for mulled wine spread across their empire and the regions they traded with.

​As its popularity grew throughout the middle ages, Europeans would mix heated wine with spices they believed  promoted wellness and defended against sickness. Hence the modern drink, which includes cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, and hints of orange. 




Blue Goose Mulled Wine

1 Bottle of Mystic Blue from Blue Goose Vineyards
1 Package Crown mulling spices from Blue Goose Vineyards 
1 Cup Cranapple juice
or 
1/2 cup Cranberry juice 
1/2 cup Apple juice
For Garnish 
Thinly Sliced orange 
Cinnamon sticks

*for large groups double... or triple 
1. Combine all ingredients in a slow cooker to warm or warm via stovetop
2. Pour into cups and garnish with sliced orange and cinnamon sticks

The Blue Goose Origin Story

Here at the Blue Goose we are often asked about the origin of our name, and we thought we would share it with you.

Our family lived in a blue dutch colonial style house for the majority of my childhood. This house sat on a 218 acre family farm located across town. We tended to our crops of corn, wheat, and tobacco, as well as, our livestock. We had a large herd of cattle, and a smaller herd of adorable dairy goats. Located on this nostalgic piece of childhood adventures, were several ponds used for irrigation. They also served for many of my explorations with my loyal farm dog Cinnamon. These ponds became very popular with the southbound Canadian geese. We named this farm of ours The Blue Goose.

Years later we moved into our current location. We raised and cared for our horses while getting our bovine fix by visiting the dairy farm next door. My grandfather would often visit Mr. Pate's farm, with me in tow anxiously awaiting my customary ride on Pate's ATV. Again, there were ponds located on a farm near our home used by the iconic southbound Canadian geese. 

While I was attending Maryville College my father retired. He lasted about a week before starting his next big project...a vineyard. As dad and I set out to determine our brand identity, we were immediately  posed with the question of what to name our vineyards. Dad suddenly looked up and said, "Blue Goose Vineyards!" He was right, it has, and always will be, part of our family. 

During your next visit to the winery as you leave take a look at the picture hanging to the right of the door. You will see a large sign that reads "The Blue Goose" and a three year old me, with bright red hair, smiling and petting our Austrian shepherd Bobo.

Meet Annabelle! She loves her job and enjoys swimming when not chasing cows.
We recently won a people's choice competition! Even though, we were up against some amazing large wineries in the area we won, so thank you to all our voters out there.

With our recent weddings and patio rentals we've been very busy on the farm. These awards keep the family moving towards more and more progress (aka manual labor and lots of sweating). So keep them coming guys! 

If you want visit a winery with vineyards on property we are the place for you.  While you enjoy a bottle you can even get to know some of our livestock. Daisy and Vinny have become quite popular with our guests. Come out soon and discover for yourself why we are one of the best places to visit in the Knoxville and Maryville area.

Volunteering for a local small business

Hello everyone!  

Working on the farm can be quite exhausting and sometimes we need a multitude of extra hands. For the entire month of July and part of August we will be taking volunteers for our mid-summer pruning.

Mid-summer pruning actually helps to foster a larger harvest and acts as a preventative to fungi without spraying our vines. When we give our vines a little haircut, all the energy that was being wasted on unnecessary foliage, is now going to develop larger clusters of grapes. Also when we trim up all the extra leaves, light and wind can now get to all those cute little baby grapes. Why is light and wind so important? Well when we have rain we want the vine to be able to dry itself off so those clusters do not develop rot or get a fungus. Some larger vineyards use a fungicide spray, which simply does not fit into our philosophy here at the Blue Goose. Since we  have a hearty and healthy native plant, we simply allow nature to do it's work with wind and sun. However, this method means more manual labor for a small family farm, which is why we are asking for volunteers.

If you or anyone you know would like to give back to your community by helping a locally owned farm...we need your help. Hope scholarship recipients, church members, good samaritans, and charitable society members are all welcome.

Dinner on the Vineyard

Looking for a unique date night or a great family dinner location? How about on the vineyard. This summer and fall the Blue Goose is your perfect picnic location. Our Orchard Patio is complete with a fireplace and park grill. So gather your best grill master and enjoy some after hour fun on the farm. 

For use of our Orchard Patio a reservation is required in advance. To schedule a time please email our marketing department at bluegoosemarketing@gmail. Spots are filling up fast so reserve yours soon. Any inquires of rental policies and procedures may also be directed to our marketing department. 

Basic rental fees:

Weeknights Monday-Thursday 5-9pm

$40                under 10 guests
$80-$100      10-20 guests
$200              20-30 guests

Weekends Friday-Saturday 5-10pm

$55                 under 10 guests
$95-$115        10-20 guests
$215               20-30 guests

Sundays are reviewed on a case by case basis through our marketing department. A formal request for review maybe be submitted here.

other fees may apply and all renters must sign documentation to secure their reservation.
