“Volunteering is the ultimate exercise in democracy. You vote in elections once a year, but when you volunteer, you vote every day about the kind of community you want to live in.” ~unknownHello everyone!
Working on the farm can be quite exhausting and sometimes we need a multitude of extra hands. For the entire month of July and part of August we will be taking volunteers for our mid-summer pruning. Mid-summer pruning actually helps to foster a larger harvest and acts as a preventative to fungi without spraying our vines. When we give our vines a little haircut, all the energy that was being wasted on unnecessary foliage, is now going to develop larger clusters of grapes. Also when we trim up all the extra leaves, light and wind can now get to all those cute little baby grapes. Why is light and wind so important? Well when we have rain we want the vine to be able to dry itself off so those clusters do not develop rot or get a fungus. Some larger vineyards use a fungicide spray, which simply does not fit into our philosophy here at the Blue Goose. Since we have a hearty and healthy native plant, we simply allow nature to do it's work with wind and sun. However, this method means more manual labor for a small family farm, which is why we are asking for volunteers. If you or anyone you know would like to give back to your community by helping a locally owned farm...we need your help. Hope scholarship recipients, church members, good samaritans, and charitable society members are all welcome. If interested please contact our director of operations, Cat. You can email her at [email protected] or you can call or text her business cell at 865.804.1959 for more information or any inquiries. We will also be taking volunteers for our harvest this fall so keep an eye out for more volunteer opportunities.
